Everything That Glitters Isn't Gold

“Everything that glitters ain’t always gold.” My dad and I always joke about these “old folks’ sayings” as I like to call them. I had a hard time understanding the meaning behind many of them as a child and it seemed as though that’s how my father spoke - in riddles and sayings. Funny enough, while studying this Proverb, this particular phrase was the first thing that came to mind.

God has designed a biblical model for us to follow when it comes to the gift of sex which HE purposefully created. There we will find satisfaction and fulfillment. If we are not careful and deviate from that path, what waits for us is destruction. He examines our paths and our ways are in full view of Him. This does not exclude our thought life. What we let settle in our hearts when we take our eyes off the path He has set before us, slowly turns to outward expression, and then full blown sin.

Chapter 5 serves us a stern warning against adultery and the consequential effects of the sin it leaves behind. Our modern world is laced with in-your-face seduction. Television, magazines, movies, music, you name it, all sparkling with the glittery temptation of lust and sex (v.3). But the Bible tells us that what lies beneath all of that allure is death – not gold, not life.

3 For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey,
and her mouth is smoother than oil.
4 But in the end she is as bitter as poison,
as dangerous as a double-edged sword.
— Proverbs 5:3-4

As a young lady getting my first tastes of freedom, I think about how heavy the influence of the world once was on my life. I quickly found out that the gleaming sparkle of the world before me didn't exactly lead to green pastures and daisy fields. In hindsight, now a young married woman, my heart is saddened by the deception I was under, and I shudder at the thought of how easy it is for married men, for all men, to get caught up in the glitter. But there is one who has been tempted in every way we experience and we thank God for Him because he overcame the world; and likewise so can we when we follow his teachings and stay accountable to a trusted man or woman of God to help us steer clear of this temptation.

Father we love You, and we thank You for Your word, which is truth and real honey. God we ask that you forgive our waywardness and lead us faithfully into Your path. Lord, may we consume Your word today and let it settle in our hearts. We thank you for our own overflowing wells and we rejoice in the one you have made specifically for us. Help us to apply your word to our lives today and learn to embrace your discipline and instruction with glad hearts. Bless our unions and continue to lead us into your purposes for us. In Your Holy name we pray, Amen.
