This or That

One of my favorite car commercials from 2010 is the Kia Soul that featured the remake of the song, The Choice is Yours, from rap artists Black Sheep (Don’t ask me how I know this). The remix was titled: This or That? . . . and went like That:

You can get with this, or you can get with that
I think you’ll get with this, but this is where it’s at
You can get with this, or you can get with that
I think you’ll get with this yes, for this is kinda phat

It’s a funny commercial with a catchy beat and rapping hamsters that compares the two choices offered by automobile manufactures: Boxy and Boring . . . or Cool and Flashy.

Life is about choices; and nothing points that out more clearly than the book of Proverbs.

In Proverbs 13:1-12, Solomon goes through a litany of choices each person must make. Whether it’s being a wise child and accepting discipline compared to the person who refuses correction, to controlling your tongue compared to saying whatever you feel, to working hard or being lazy; Solomon says again and again, you can go with this or you can go with that. The Choice is yours.

But unlike the artists, Black Sheep’s, suggestion that in the end whatever you choose really doesn’t matter, Solomon is very clear that the choices we make between wise and foolish behavior DO matter. A lot. Yes, we all have the freedom to choose. But what we don’t have the freedom of is to choose the consequences of our choices. And every choice has a consequence: whether good or bad. Listen to what he says right in the middle of this section.

Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin.
— Proverbs 13:6

“Godliness” or right actions guard our lives and puts us on a path of living in relationship with God. It helps us prosper and not feel threatened he says in the verses surrounding it. And righteous living leads to a life of “light and joy” and a whole lot less conflict. Aren’t those the qualities you want for your life?

Then you must choose and your choices will be evident by your daily actions.

Since Kia took some liberty with the song, let me try my hand at it

You can get with this, or you can get with that

I’d hope that you’d be wise, and heed what I’d advise

And though you get to choose, you just might get the blues

When you ignore the rule, and end up like a fool.

I think Solomon would be down with that.

Lord, help us today to choose you, even when the choices aren't easy. And help us to seek you when the choices are obvious. With the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, we know it will lead us to the path of righteousness (right living).
